What
are your favorite childhood summer memories?
Perhaps
it was playing outside with friends, visiting a local museum, park, or
attraction, or learning a new skill.
YOU know
that summer matters. It’s a time when some kids have a safe space to play and
thrive outside of school; but it’s also a time when some children can fall
behind - especially those facing disadvantages.
Community
members like you bridge that gap by enabling fun and enriching experiences,
academic learning activities, and critical support, including positive mentors
at the Boys & Girls Clubs of South San Luis Obispo County.
This
reflection is shared by a former Club member whose journey came full circle: Looking
back as a former Club Kid now working as a Club staff professional, my favorite
part of summer camp was the field trips and all the hands-on activities. The
Club impacted me in a way I didn’t expect - it was so much more than just a
babysitting place. My imagination blossomed, and instead of only learning like
on any normal school day, we had stations and fun times where I could still be
focused but not forced. I learned real-life skills like interacting with subject
matter guest speakers, and as I became a tween, I built friendships and strong
connections with my peers. Those experiences helped shape who I am today. I
wasn’t always the easiest kid, but the Club helped me grow into a confident
communicator and the person I am now. I’m truly thankful, and it’s an honor to
now give back to the same place that believed in me.
Your
gift today will ensure kids, tweens, and teens in South County return to school
next fall ready to succeed - and prepared to become anything they can dream.
