Getting Started as a Volunteer Tutor

Step One: Complete an Online Application

Visit our Become a Tutor page and submit your application.

Step Two: Expect a Follow-Up from KLC

A Kern Literacy Council representative will contact you via phone or email with the full tutor application and next steps.

Step Three: Complete the Online Tutor Orientation

You’ll be required to complete our online tutor orientation course, which is available on the Become a Tutor page.

Step Four: Submit Required Documentation

Provide a copy of your high school diploma or equivalent (advanced degrees are also accepted).

Step Five: Background Check

All tutors must pass a background check, which KLC covers. This process typically takes about two weeks.

Step Six: Get Matched with a Student

Once all steps are completed, KLC will match you with a student based on your availability.

???? Tutoring times: Afternoon, evening, and weekend sessions available. Online tutoring is also an option.

???? Tutoring locations: Sessions are typically held at Kern County libraries, community centers, or other partner sites.
